What does the FED do when inflation rears it's ugly head?

At some point, the high cost of fuel has to find it's way into the inflation figures. Traditionally, this has led to the FED raising interest rates and slowing the economy. Now that we are already staring at a recession, will the FED allow inflation to increase or will they put the US and the World into a recession?

If it's less than 5%, then they've historically ignored it. The country has experienced an average of 3.4% annual inflation (using their numbers about the Consumer Price Index - http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:-ItlY5Dn0NYJ:minneapolisfed.org/research/data/us/calc/hist1913.cfm+http://minneapolisfed.org/research/data/us/calc/hist1913.cfm&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us )

If it gets pretty bad, like it did in the 1970's then they would create an artificial recession. They would take money out of the economy, which has the indirect effect of raising interest rates and making loans harder to get, and makes it harder for small businesses to expand. The end result is almost always an increase in unemployment, which makes it so that people stop asking for pay raises (because they are happy to just keep their jobs). No matter which way the Federal Reserve acts (to either cut inflation or cut unemployment), the poor and middle-class generally end up suffering, because rich people have more means of avoiding the Fed's manipulations of the economy.

Currently the Fed is not focused on inflation. Since we are in a recession, they will do the opposite, and try to maintain employment levels.

Fuel cell technology and research has come a long way since the early days. Fuel cells used to be large, bulky, and expensive to build and maintain. But this new generation is any but big and bulky. In fact, it is now possible to build fuel cells small enough to power nearly any small household appliance.

1. Fuel Cells for Everyday Use

With the development of these new small fuel cells could come a major evolution in portable power sources for small household appliances. Because fuel cells can now be made that are small and lightweight, they can make nearly any small appliance in your house cordless. I'm sure you can easily see the advantages of that!

2. Developing the Small Fuel Cell

While these types of applications were not exactly what the pioneers of fuel cell research had in mind, they are a natural offspring of the desire to make smaller, lighter, and more efficient fuel cell designs. With such obvious applications and ever-decreasing costs to manufacture fuel cells, expect to see fuel cell powered versions of many small household appliances in the near future. If the success of the laptop fuel cell is any indication, fuel cells could very well be the next big thing.
